Stack unveils plans for former Hatch site under Mancunian Way

Leisure developer Stack is submitting a planning application for the site under the Mancunian Way on Oxford Road in a fresh attempt to develop the site after Bruntwood gave up its ambitions for its similar venture Hatch last year.
Leisure operators at Hatch are being encouraged to apply for a place and “will be given priority during the selection process”.
Like Hatch, the scheme will feature street food, bars, and live entertainment, housed in repurposed shipping containers over two levels.
However, the proposed new set-up will incorporate glazing and pavement seating, creating a frontage that connects directly onto Oxford Road.
Central to the development is a large stage, which will be a focal point for daily live entertainment, ranging from family-friendly events and quiz nights to mass sing-alongs and dog shows.
The site layout also retains mature trees within a courtyard area, further enhancing the space’s ambiance.
In addition to the main plaza and entertainment stage, the development will include two new outward-facing retail units and a dual-aspect coffee shop.
Neill Winch, CEO of Stack, which operates in Sunderland, Lincoln and Newcastle, expressed confidence in the new development, stating, “We believe this site is the perfect fit for our concept, and we’re excited to bring our blend of street food, bars, and live entertainment to Manchester.
“Subject to planning approval being granted, we are confident STACK Manchester will become a much-loved venue for local residents as well as a successful visitor attraction.”
The project is expected to create 160 full and part-time jobs, contributing to the local economy and offering new opportunities for small businesses.
Asked by TheBusinessDesk.com how Stack would differ from Hatch, Project Development Director, Gemma Dishman said the new project “takes the essence” of the previous Hatch container scheme, but “elevates it” with a “wider variety of events and live entertainment every day”.
She added: “Stack Manchester will feature daily live music, kids’ entertainment during school holidays, mass sing-alongs, and other engaging activities designed to create a vibrant atmosphere for all ages. This dynamic social hub not only brings together local street food and bars but also focuses on community engagement through an exciting line up of events that transform the space into a lively destination for everyone. Stack Manchester isn’t just a place to visit; it’s a place to immerse yourself in memorable experiences, connect with others, and enjoy entertainment that truly brings the community together.”
Last week TheBusinessDesk.com reported on a plan for a Stack in Wigan, while other projects in the pipeline include a second site in Newcastle, Middlesbrough, Whitley Bay, Durham, Bishop Auckland, Carlisle, Northampton, Leeds, and Sheffield.
