Council to sell 16-acre foodstore site in Carlisle

A 16.2 acre site in the West of Carlisle has been placed on the market by Carlisle City Council.
The land, which forms part of the Morton Masterplan, is a development site next to Wigton Road which contains a development opportunity for an 88,000 sq ft foodstore.
The council has appointed agents Montagu Evans to manage the sale. It has produced brochures which have been sent to around 1,000 retail development specialists.
Alan Harris of Montagu Evans said: “This is the only supermarket site which covers the south and west of Carlisle.
“It will soon benefit from the Carlisle Northern Development Route, linking it to junction 44 of the M6. It will, therefore, be a prized asset to the eventual buyer and we anticipate massive interest.
“We have worked closely with the council on this plan for several years and we are delighted it is finally coming to fruition.”
Carlisle City Council secured outline planning permission for the development of a foodstore-led district centre at Morton in January 2011, although a developer would have to work up plans for a more detailed proposal.
The council said the site is one of several identified in its asset disposal programme.
Carlisle City Council leader, Cllr Mike Mitchelson, said: “The sale of the Morton site is a positive step forward towards realising the council’s ambitions to use its property assets to help promote the growth of the city and fill the gap for a much-needed major food store to serve Morton and the south west of the city.”
