Forrest growth continues with solar contract wins

SOCIAL housing support services group Forrest has won contracts to fit solar panels to properties in Preston and Salford as it continues to expand.

The Preston headquartered company, which is privately owned, is installing roof-mounted solar panels on ‘community gateway’ properties across Preston which will reduce energy consumption by 20%.

Forrest has also been commissioned to fit solar panels on the roofs of three tower blocks in Blackfriars, Salford, for Salix Homes.

These will provide Blackfriars Court, White Friar Court and Grey Friar Court with renewable energy for the light and power that is required in 15 communal areas.

Forrest, which was backed by private equity firm LDC in July 2007, saw its sales increase to £46.8m for the 12 months to August 31, 2009, up from £45.3m in 2008.

Lee McCarren, chief executive office of Forrest, said: “New legislation and forthcoming changes to energy tariffs mean solar photovoltaic installations are becoming an ideal arrangement for housing associations, because it reduces their carbon footprint while reducing fuel poverty to the elderly and vulnerable.

“Over the last 12-months we have significantly enhanced our expertise in solar photovoltaics and other micro-renewable technologies. This will be a major growth area for the company as we continue with our strategy to increase our service range and geographic reach.”

Forrest refurbishes and maintains over 18,000 homes a year for a wide range of clients throughout the north of England and the Midlands.

Recently awarded contracts include a national framework with Places for People with an estimated value of £40m and a £5m contract with Helena Housing to implement a range of carbon reduction measures, including the installation of solar technology and so-called smart meters.
