Kuits secures lease for UK’s first Fab Lab in Manchester

MANCHESTER law firm Kuits Solicitors has advised The Manufacturing Institute on the lease of the premises for its new innovation centre.
The country’s first ‘Fab Lab’ was launched in the Chips building, in Manchester’s New Islington, last month.
The initiative – which aims to help inventors and budding entrepreneurs by providing them with a place to try and test their ideas – has been supported by the Manchester Innovation Investment Fund, which includes Manchester City Council.
Martin Davies, commercial property partner at Kuits who advised on the lease, said: “We were delighted to be involved in advising on The Manufacturing Institute’s introduction of the UK’s first Fab Lab in Manchester.
“With all the regeneration going on around the city, we feel it is fitting the Fab Lab concept was brought to the UK in East Manchester, an area steeped in industrial history.”
In addition to negotiating the original lease, Kuits will also provide The Manufacturing Institute with on-going advice on commercial matters relating to Fab Lab Manchester.
The original Fab Lab concept was introduced by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in inner-city Boston and plans are now afoot to roll them out across the UK.
Since its launch, Fab Labs have spread across the world from urban areas to villages in Africa.
