Mulbury to build 50 apartments in Darwen

MULBURY Homes is to build a scheme of 50 apartments in Darwen, Lancashire, targeted at the over 60s.

Lymm-based Mulbury is developing the apartments on behalf of housing association Twin Valley Homes following its purchase of the former Darwen Health Centre site in Union Street.

The site had been partially converted into luxury apartments but work had stopped on the project in 2006 after the previous developer went into administration and had remained untouced since.

Mulbury’s scheme will use the steel structure put in place on the stalled development but will strip back the partially built brickwork and embark on a complete rebuild. It will also install a number of communal areas on the ground floor of the site.

Building work on is expected to begin in the next few weeks and is scheduled to last around 12 months.

Mulbury Homes director Greg Mulligan said: “This development will provide efficient and modern homes giving residents the independence of having their own front door, but also allowing them to feel part of a community thanks to a number of communal areas for socialising and leisure activities.

“We are now working closely with Twin Valley Homes to ensure the homes fully meet residents’ needs. As well as providing much needed housing, this development will revitalise the area, finally completing what has been a building site for the last few years.”

Twin Valley Homes’ head of housing, Ian Bell, said: “This is a very exciting opportunity to regenerate this site and provide safe and secure retirement living properties in Darwen. We have some excellent retirement living accommodation in the borough and this is a fantastic addition to our portfolio.”
