THE Manchester studio of architectural practice BDP has been appointed to design two new buildings for Nanjing Medical University in the Jiangsu province of China.

BDP is carrying out structural and building services design for the £100m project, with head of sustainability Steve Merridew using a variety of low energy design features, including one of the world’s largest ground source heat pumps to create one of the most sustainable buildings in the country.

One of the new buildings will house lecture theatres and laboratories, while the other will be an administrative building but also house a museum and conference auditorium.

The buildings will have a low carbon heating and cooling facility, which will use water from a nearby lake.

Other key sustainable features include the use of passive underground ventilation earth tubes to pre-cool the ventilation air in the summer and pre-heat the ventilation air in the winter.

Mr Merridew said: “Nanjing University is an exciting new project, which has allowed us to apply our recognised expertise in sustainability to develop a unique and innovative design, which will be amongst the most sustainable in China.

“This project will not only continue to enhance our reputation in Asia, but also provides a demonstration of how specialist skills developed in the UK, and the North West in particular, are highly sought after in international markets
such as China.”

The project is expected to complete in 2013.
