Booths hopes for success in Europe

FAMILY-owned supermarket retailer Booths is flying the flag for the region and the nation, in a European business competition.
The European Business Awards selected the Preston-based group to represent the UK in its 2012/13 awards programme.
Booths is one of 50 national finalists in ‘The Millicom Award for Environmental and Corporate Sustainability’ category and will now compete for national champion status in the next round of the competition.
The European Business Awards has identified some of Europe’s brightest businesses based on three core principles – innovation, business excellence and sustainability.
Booths is the first UK supermarket to make publically available a comprehensive assessment of greenhouse gas emissions from the supply chains of its entire product range.
Booths, which has 28 food stores in the North West and Yorkshire, has a 160 year heritage of retailing local and regional foods, 25% of all its products are locally sourced, with 85% of its meat being from the region and 65% of bread sold is baked locally by a family run craft bakers.
Chairman Edwin Booth says, “We’re delighted to have been selected to represent Britain in these international awards.
“Working closely with local suppliers and producers has always been a core value of Booths and being recognised for our efforts in sustaining the British environment and agriculture is a very proud achievement for us. We look forward to the next round of the competition.”
The European Business Awards is dedicated to raising the visibility and progress of companies excelling in innovation twinned with successful commercial results whilst acting responsibly.
Adrian Tripp, chief executive of the European Business Awards, says, “Over the past six years we’ve received an incredibly high standard of entries from organisations that are passionate about their business. However, very few get the chance to fly the flag for their country and compete across Europe to be recognised as one of Europe’s leading companies.
“It really is an exceptional accolade to be picked as a National Finalist, and together with our sponsors and supporters we’re looking forward to seeing Booths in the next round.”
