Gobstopper’s sweet success sparks second shop

RETRO sweet shop The Gobstopper is to open a second shop, 15 months after the launch of its first site in Hale.

The retailer, which has also recently launched a transactional website offering free deliveries, says the new shop on Eagle Brow, will be open by the middle of November.

Gobstopper has bought the existing business which trades as “The Sweet Shop” and will be re-fitting and rebranding it.

The Gobstopper was advised on the acquisition of the existing shop by Christine Williams and Martin Davies of Manchester law firm Kuits Solicitors. The fit-out work will be carried out by Paragon Construction.

Lisa and Mark Oakes, owners of The Gobstopper, said: “We’ve come a long way since opening our first shop 15 months ago. We knew that retro sweets were having something of a renaissance and we have taken advantage of this by our timely expansion, both online and off.

“The challenging climate has brought about opportunties, but it also has highlighted how retail products that are perceived as ‘affordable treats” are proving to be successful. Our website is proof of the demand from across the market and we intend to continue investing online and expanding on the high street as and when the right opportunities present themselves.”

As in the Hale store,  The Gobstopper in Lymm will embrace the tradition and nostalgia of buying sweets with a vintage counter and traditional kilner jars. It will stock favourites including Rhubarb and Custards, Sherbert Lemons and Cola Cubes alongside liquorice, chocolate, fudge and locally-sourced Dunham Massey ice cream and apple juice.

The shop will also stock a range of classic retro fizzy drinks including dandelion and burdock and cream soda as well as vegetarian, sugar-free, halal and kosher sweets.
