Property Briefs: Globe completes Oldham Coliseum; record footfall for Merseyway

LANCASHIRE building firm Globe Construction has completed the £1.65m refurbishment of the 127-year-old Oldham Coliseum theatre.

Globe’s team installed a heating and cooling system and refurbished the auditorium, adding new seating and lighting.

Globe director Kevin Hargreaves said: “We are delighted to have been involved in such an iconic project for the town of Oldham.

“The theatre dates back to 1885 and the refurbishment works will ensure that the Coliseum remains a leading producing theatre offering a varied programme of shows and educational activities for the local community.”

The theatre’s chief executive Kevin Shaw said: “Globe has been working flat out to make sure that everything is completed to the standard we expected. The theatre looks fantastic and it was great to see the brand new auditorium full again.”

Globe, which has offices in Warrington and Lancaster, has previously worked on the Vanbrugh Theatre at The King’s School, Chester.

MERSEYWAY shopping centre saw the number of visitors rise by 8% in the 10 months to October.

Latest figures show it attracted 8,139,418 visitors compared to 7,540,418 in the same 10-month period of 2011.

The figures were buoyed by record visitor numbers in the summer when more than 2.5 million people visiting shops and events including the Merseyway Festival and Reading Comes Alive.

It has a low void rate with seven of the 104 units at Merseyway vacant. Four of these are either in solicitor’s hands or under negotiation.

Mark Rawstron, senior director of property agents GVA and managing agent of Merseyway, said: “The outlook for Merseyway continues to strengthen with more retailers being attracted and retained and footfall figures continuing to rise. We had a record summer in terms of visitor numbers and maintained that level of footfall throughout the autumn.

“Our partnership with Stockport Council allows us to work together to give consumers what they want via an increasingly diverse retail and leisure mix by attracting national brands and independent operators such as Metro Fitness.”
