Morgan Sindall lands £18m Whitehaven development

CONSTRUCTION group Morgan Sindall has won a contract from the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority to deliver a new £18m office scheme in Cumbria.

The Albion Square development in Whitehaven comprises two four-storey office buildings, totalling 100,000 sq ft, constructed at two adjacent sites on Swingpump Lane in the centre of the town.

The offices, once completed, will be home to around 1,000 Sellafield  office workers who will move from the main site, boosting the town centre.

Albion Square is a key project in the Britain’s Energy Coast (BEC) programme and aims to boost the economy of Whitehaven by attracting new workers to the town centre.

John Clarke, chief executive of the NDA and board member of Britain’s Energy Coast said. “Albion Square is an excellent example of how we can work with colleagues at BEC, Copeland Borough Council and the supply chain to deliver a project that not only enables Sellafield Ltd to relocate staff giving us greater flexibility to deliver decommissioning on site, but also will bring real economic benefits to Whitehaven itself.”

Chris Brown, area director for Morgan Sindall, said: “Whitehaven is a town which harbours so much potential.  The centralisation of approximately 1,000 people working in the town will give the local economy a significant boost whilst the wider regeneration scheme shall no doubt breathe new life into Whitehaven.”

RMJM acted as concept and design architects, Hurd Rolland Partnership as project architects with project management by DJDeloitte.

The project appointment follows Morgan Sindall’s recent confirmation as preferred delivery partner, with joint venture partner Arup, to provide a range of infrastructure asset services to the Sellafield site.

The contract, worth a potential £1.1bn, is expected to be signed shortly and will run for an initial five year period but could be extended for a further 10 years.
