Roger Stephenson’s firm folds

A practice run by one of Manchester’s most celebrated architects, Roger Stephenson, has gone into liquidation owing more than £500,000.

Roger Stephenson Architects, based at Adair Street near Piccadilly, closed its doors at the start of the month.

He has set up a new firm, based in Castlefield, called Roger Stephenson Studio with associates Keith Hamilton and Jyh Lee.

A statement of affairs filed by Altrincham-based liquidator Lucas Johnson, shows Mr Stephenson is owed £77,884 by the failed business, while Mr Hamilton and Mr Lee are owed £45,000 and £40,800 respectively.

Unsecured creditors are owed £553,000 with HM Revenue & Customs shouldering an exposure of £226,000. Trade creditors are owed £48,000, while employees are owed the same figure. The statement of affairs also shows there is a debt of £153,579 to the Redundancy Payments Service.

Mr Stephenson has been working in the city since the 1970s and is responsible for the conversion of the Free Trade Hall into the Radisson Edwardian, the remodelling of Piccadilly Plaza, apartments on the site of the Hacienda nightclub, and the extension to Chetham’s School of Music.

He set up Roger Stephenson Architects after his previous business Stephenson Bell went into administration in 2011.

Mr Stephenson could not be reached for comment.
