Property briefs: Hotel sold, Eddisons gears up for auction

HAZEL Bank Country House Hotel at Rosthwaite in Borrowdale, near Keswick, has been sold from a guide price of £1.35m.

The eight-bed hotel has been bought by Gary and Donna Macrae from Sandra Gittins who is retiring. The Macraes are former owners of The Langstrath at Stonethwaite and continue to own The Wild Strawberry in Keswick.

Hazel Bank was built in 1859 by Thomas Simpson and was used by author Hugh Walpole as the setting for The Herries Chronicles and as the birthplace of his literary character Judith Parrish. It has three bedrooms for the owners and sits in four acres of landscaped gardens and grounds including a detached bungalow, let on a self-catering basis.

Haydn Spedding, associate director in the hotel and licensed property division of the North West office of Colliers International in Manchester, said: “Hazel Bank is a beautiful country house hotel and it was no surprise that there was considerable interest, culminating in Gary and Donna’s purchase. They plan to offer their own well-known high standard of welcome and food at this outstanding hotel.”
