Northwich Memorial Hall makes way for £13m leisure centre

CHESHIRE West and Cheshire Council is pushing ahead with the demolition of Northwich Memorial Hall to make way for a £13.7m leisure centre.
The venue hosted some of the biggest names in pop and soul music in the 1960s and ’70s.
The Beatles performed several times along with The Hollies, The Animals, Tom Jones, Cilla Black, Dusty Springfield, Lulu, Ben E King and Jimmy Ruffin.
It was built in 1960 to commemorate victory in the Second World War and remember those who died, and was closed in March.
A new building, Memorial Court, will have swimming pools, a flume, a spa and a gym. There will also be a commemorative garden to the dead of the two world wars.
Councillor Stuart Parker, executive member for recreation and culture, said: “Memorial Court will be a wonderful asset for the town and is an important part of the transformation of Northwich over the next few years. The leisure complex will enhance the riverside site and help create a vital link with the traditional town centre and the Barons Quay development.”
Wates Construction has been appointed to handle the contract.
