PLANS drawn up by Altrincham’s Planit Intelligent Environments for an inland “surf lake” in Snowdonia have been approved.
Conwy Adventure Leisure, part of the Wigan-based Ainscough Group, wants to develop the facility on a 40-acre site at the former Dolgarrog Aluminium Works which closed in 2007.
CAL said the “wavegarden” – which will create two-metre high waves – will be the first in the UK, and possibly the world. It expects to attract 70,000 visitors a year and create 100 jobs.
Managing director Steve Davies said: “It is excellent news to have received planning permission for Surf Snowdonia and it means we are well on track with our plans to bring surfing to North Wales. We think we will attract up to 75,000 visitors a year, not just surfers but families too.”
Pete Swift, Director of Planit-IE said: “We are thrilled our plans have received permission and it is testament to the entire team involved in the project that we have been able to progress so quickly.”
CAL is also advised by NJL Planning; Colliers International; Regeneris Consulting; TRP Engineers; Brabners and WCP Project Management. Work is scheduled to begin in early autumn and CAL aims to have the facility open for surfing next summer.
