Vernatech’s Vortex ready for worldwide launch

AN innovative new machine from Bolton-based Vernatech, part of Vernagroup, aims to help advance infection prevention in hospitals around the globe.

The new Vortex macerator – designed and engineered in Bolton – disposes of pulp bed pans and other single-use pulp medical products by breaking them down into minute, biodegradable fragments which then wash down the drain with waste water.

Vernatech’s existing macerator is already used in 85% of NHS hospitals and on wards and in care homes around the world. The new Vortex is designed to work with sister company Vernacare’s pulp products – avoiding the infection risks of using plastic toileting and washing equipment.

The Vortex is the latest machine from the business that has 40 years experience in developing the machines and has already been trialled at seven hospitals in the UK, Europe and Australia this year.

The new machine includes new features such as an anti bacterial deodoriser which cleans inside the macerator at the end of the cycle and a hands-free lid opening mechanism.

The trials found that 84% of ward staff reported that the new hands free opening device saved time, while 88% believed that the new macerator could reduce cross infection, and 90% of nurses found it easy to operate.

“We have sought the views of clinical specialists around the world in developing Vortex,” said Sara Scott, director of Vernatech.

“Those who have seen the new macerator are excited by its improved infection prevention features and reassured that it is developed and built by Vernatech which has such a strong engineering pedigree and track record of reliability and back up support.
