Air traffic control tower could win Building of the Year

MANCHESTER Airport’s new air traffic control tower is on the shortlist for tonight’s Building of the Year Award.
It has been shortlisted along with The Pavilion at Lancashire County Cricket Club, Number One Riverside in Rochdale and ITV’s new Coronation Street production centre at MediaCityUK.
The winner will be revealed tonight at a black tie dinner hosted by Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce’s property and construction committee.
Chair Mike Gibson said: “This competition celebrates the innovative buildings that are constructed in our region each year, and showcases the successful collaborations that take place between talented project teams in our industry and their clients.
“This year we invited nominations from everyone in our sector and, in spite of the difficult economic conditions the industry has faced, we received many worthy entries for new buildings from across Greater Manchester. The final four buildings each, in their own way, make a significant contribution to our city region in terms construction and development.”
Last year’s winner was The Space Youth Intervention Centre for 42nd Street in Manchester and previous winners have included MediaCity UK and the People’s History Museum.
