Export Week explores Asian opportunities

OPPORTUNITIES to trade in Southern Asia is the theme of today’s Export Week event in Lancashire.

As part of a busy five days of activity across the region, UK Trade & Investment is holding an event in Blackburn, at the headquarters of family-owned wallcovering manufacturer Graham & Brown.

Export Week is a bi-annual national event which forms part of a drive to double UK exports to £1 trillion by 2020 and get 100,000 more companies exporting.

The Blackburn event brings together prominent speakers and experts, as well as companies already trading in Southern Asia, to provide an insight into this dynamic market.

There will be discussions on Growing Your Business in Southern Asia with Faisal Nadeem, directo of the Karachi-based Dolmen Group, Steve Toogood, director, UK India Business Council and Alex Marshall, from Merseyside Clarke Energy, which trades internationally.

A panel session on Supporting your Business in Southern Asia will offer the chance to ask questions of panel members Steve Cowles from UK Export Finance, Stephen Edwards from Barclays and Robin Miles from international logistics business Kuehne and Nagel.

Clive Drinkwater, regional director, UKTI North West, says: “This event will offer delegates an opportunity to find out about the variety of business prospects available across India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, covering all aspects of doing business there, and offering the chance to hear from and network with companies who are already active in the markets.”

Event host Graham and Brown is one of UKTI North West’s Export Champions for 2014. The Export Champions are executives from regional companies with extensive international business experience who offer advice and support to other firms.

Chief executive Andrew Graham, said:”My advice to exporters is don’t act like a Brit abroad – have knowledge of local practices.  Think global but act local.  Find good partners – working far from home requires ultimate trust.”
