Deal paves way for £32m Buxton spa hotel

NORTH West law firm, Brabners Chaffe Street has advised High Peak Borough Council and Derbyshire County Council on agreements that pave the way for a £32m hotel and spa at Buxton’s Grade I listed Crescent building.

The law firm, which has offices in Manchester, Liverpool and Preston, said it would be only the second genuine spa hotel in the UK in more than a century.

The agreements have been struck between landowners – High Peak Borough Council and Derbyshire County Council – and Nestlé, the owner of Buxton Spring water, which has a right to draw underground mineral water, under licence from the borough council.

The deal also included the developer, the Buxton Crescent Hotel and Thermal Spa Company, which was established by the development consortium of the Trevor Osborne Property Group, CP Holdings and spa operator Danubius Hotels, as well as the two councils. The plans include an exclusive 79-room hotel and spa complex, including shops and a visitor centre.

Brabners corporate partner, Robert Street, said: “We are delighted to have worked on this significant project. It is testament to what can be achieved when ambitious organisations with shared aims work together.”

The Crescent building, which dates from 1789, has lain empty for several years following the closure of a local hotel and the decision by Derbyshire county council to vacate offices at the site and relocate Buxton’s library.

Charles Russell advised the developers, Norton Rose advised Nestle and O’Connors advised the two councils on the insurance aspects of the transaction.
