Construction round-up: Bolton Market Place; New Bailey

WATES Construction has made a start on the extension to the Bolton Market Place shopping centre.

Landlord Moorgarth bought the centre for around £20m from the administrators of previous owner Agora last year.

It is now planning a nine-screen cinema, operated by The Light, and wants to turn 25,000 sq ft of unused Victorian vaults into space for restaurants, bars and shops.

Tony Shenton, business unit director at Wates, said: “It is an exciting time as the ambitious plans to enhance Bolton Market Place begin to materialise and we have an excellent site team in place poised to ensure that we fulfil our client’s vision to create a vibrant leisure destination for the people of Bolton.

“Bolton Market Place will be kept fully operational and our continual engagement with the public and our neighbours will be at the heart of maintaining high standards in health and safety throughout our building works.”

The scheme has been designed by Wren Architects.

THE English Cities Fund (ECf), a joint venture between Muse Developments, Legal and General and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) has topped out the Premier Inn at its New Bailey development.

The 143-bed hotel has been forward funded by La Salle Investment Management and forms part of the wider New Bailey scheme.

Ongoing work at New Bailey also includes a 615-space multi-storey car park which is under construction and One New Bailey, a 125,000 sq ft office scheme which will start later in the year.

Phil Mayall, development director at Muse, said: “The topping out at the Premier Inn is another huge step forward for New Bailey, which is really gathering momentum. The Premier Inn is due for completion in September 2014, the multi-story car park is currently on site and due to complete in November 2014 and One New Bailey has just started on site.”
