Arup wins Manchester Uni engineering brief

ARUP is the latest contractor to be announced for the University of Manchester’s £200m new engineering campus.

The group will provide mechanical, electrical, civil, structural and public health engineering services at the project which is the first part of a £1bn planned expansion of the university.

Dutch architect Mecanoo and project managers Buro Four have already been confirmed.

The Manchester Engineering Campus Development (MECD) is the largest individual project within the wider masterplan and will involve the relocation of a number of the university’s engineering schools into a regenerated site in the heart of the existing campus.

The 700,000 sq ft scheme will be a mixture of new build and refurbishment, including the overhaul of the university’s grade II-listed Oddfellows Hall.

Keith Rudd, head of the Manchester office, said: “The Manchester Engineering Campus Development is a significant project for the University, the city, but also Arup, located just 10 minutes from our office.

“The quality of graduates from the University of Manchester has always been very high and a number of our staff previously studied at the university. Our teams are enormously proud to now have the opportunity to return to the University and help shape the future campus for our next generations of engineering and science students.”
