M&S signs up to Oldham scheme

OLDHAM Council has agreed a deal with retailer Marks & Spencer to anchor a major regeneration scheme in the Mumps area of the town.

The local authority unveiled an ambitious masterplan for the area called Prince’s Gate last month.

M&S, the anchor tenant, has signed a lease on 51,000 sq ft.

Independent economic analysis of the Prince’s Gate masterplan by AMION Consulting claims the scheme could create more than 700 new jobs and could be worth up to £21m a year to the local economy.

Overall it would deliver around 150,000 sq ft of extra retail space, up to 800 homes, including apartments, and approximately 700 car parking spaces. M&S, which intends to open a clothing, home and food store, has been in talks with the council since 2011.
