Underground classic car store gets green light

A PRIVATE storage and display facility for a large private classic car collection has been given planning permission by Warrington Council’s planning committee.

The proposal on the former Stretton Airfield consists of a two-storey subterranean space which will accommodate up to118 cars complete with a large gallery area.  A private office building an security lodge will be located at ground level.

The scheme was proposed by Hensmill Property, a company controlled by Duncan Cameron who co-founded leading price comparioson portal Moneysupermarket near Chester before selling his stake for about £162m. It is thought the car park will be used to store his private collection.

The 30,000 sq ft building will be almost entirely underground so it can have no effect on the green belt land where it is located.

The small-scale above ground structure – a contemporary office building – involves less floor space than the derelict buildings already on site.

The proposal was designed by Jeffrey Bell Architects and the planning consultants are HOW Planning. Civic Engineers and Cundall are also on the design team.
