Bands facing eviction as developers submit plan

DEVELOPERS are pressing ahead with plans to turn music studios used by bands including The Zutons, Miles Kane and The Coral into student apartment and hostel accommodation.

An application has been submitted to Liverpool City Council’s planning departments to turn Princes Building, formerly used by Elevator Studios, into  35 serviced apartments and a separate 39-room hostel.

The application has been made by LAAB Developments, based at Castle Street in Liverpool and the agent Roman Summer Associats, of Rawtenstall, Lancashire.

Although a campaign has been launched to prevent the change of use, plans for the development have been submitted to the city planning department.

A petition calling on Liverpool Council to “deny planning permission convert Princes Buildings from its current use” has been signed by more than 1,800 people.

On campaigning website Change.org, the petition’s author Veselin Mihaylov wrote: “Princes Studios currently houses over 250 musicians and 50+ bands who make up a large percentage of Liverpool’s illustrious music scene.

“If the building closes it will have a huge negative impact on the Liverpool music scene as there is a chronic shortage of flexible and permanent rehearsal space in the city.

“Please help us protect one of Liverpool’s music scene’s most valuable assets by signing this petition to stop planning permission to convert the building away from its current use.”
