£5m retail scheme gets under way

WORK has started on a £5m retail scheme at the gateway to the Lancashire town of Clitheroe.

Barnfield Construction has begun the project on behalf of developers Rawdon Investments at the site previously owned and occupied by Barker Garden Centre, which left in 2003.

Supermarket chain Aldi will occupy a 16,300 sq ft unit alongside Pets at Home which will take a 6,000 sq ft unit, including a Groom Room salon.

Brian Scott of Rawdon Investments said: “This important gateway site has been vacant for well more than a decade.

“The design of the development will enhance the entrance into Clitheroe from the south and will further improve consumer choice in the town.”

NatWest’s Real Estate team provided funding to support the development.

Paul Mercer, relationship director at NatWestsaid: “This new retail complex in Clitheroe will not only create jobs but also supports growth opportunities in Lancashire.

“We have been working with Rawdon Investments for a number of years and have developed an excellent relationship which has allowed for us to assist with company’s business growth aspirations.”

Mike Clarke, property director at Aldi said “We are pleased to be part of this exciting new scheme. We look forward to bringing our offer of high quality products at unbeatable prices to Clitheroe later in 2015.”

Aldi has almost 600 UK stores and expect to open more than one per week during 2015.

Barnfield Construction has just completed a 16,500sq ft Aldi Store for Orbit Developments in St Helens.

Cheshire-based Pets at home was founded in 1991 and has more than 380 stores across the UK, employing more than 6,000 people and this will be Barnfield’s first project with them.

Barnfield Construction was last active in Clitheroe when it built the Homebase building on Queensway.
