Derelict paper warehouse to become apartments

PLANS to convert a Grade II listed former paper warehouse in Manchester city centre into apartments have been approved by planners.

Paramount Properties in Manchester have been given the go-ahead to create 22 apartments (eight one bed and 14 two bed) and to make external alterations including demolition and replacement of the existing roof at 2 Harter Street, off Portland Street.

The application also included roof lights, reinstatement of windows and the provision of a cycle store and the cleaning, repair and repainting and installation of the glass to steel frame canopy within the adjacent yard.

Brookmoor Developments is based at Great Western Street, Manchester, and is run by Sajjad Hussain Akram.

The five-storey building dates back to the late 1885 when it was occupied by Henry and Leigh Slater Ltd, listed in the 1911 Slater’s Manchester Trade Directory as “paper strainers”.

The company survived in the same paper business until recent decades when they were bought out by API Group which continues to specialise in the production of special coated papers.
