Clubs share £444m in Premier League prize money

THE North West’s five Premier League teams shared a total of £433.9m in TV and prize money last season.

Top of the pile was champions Chelsea, but league runners-up Manchester City, were a close second in terms of finances, with £98.5m, just behind the London club which earned £98.99m.

Although Louis Van Gaal’s side finished fourth in the league, Manchester United was the third-placed in terms of prize money as a consequence of  having been featured on live TV 27 times during the season, more than any other team.

Liverpool earned £92.7m, the sixth highest overall, while Everton were 11th with £80.5m.

A sweetener for relegated Burnley will be the payment of £65.4m to the Lancashire club.

The Premier League said the revenue distributed to clubs includes income generated from the sale of central broadcasting rights (UK and international) and other central commercial rights.

The distribution of this cash is the most equitable of Europe’s major football leagues – in Spain for example Real Madrid and Barcelona command the lion’s share of income as they are allowed to sell their TV rights individually.

The sums paid out by the Premier League to each individual team are calculated as follows:   50% of UK broadcast revenue split equally between the 20 clubs;   25% of UK broadcast revenue paid in prize money per place in the table;  25% of UK broadcast revenue paid in facility fees each time a club’s matches are broadcast in the UK and an even split of all  international broadcast revenue and central commercial revenue – worth just over £32m to each club last season.

The total to all 20 clubs was £1.6bn.
