CSR valued by ‘Generation Z’ employees

ALMOST 90% of young people recognise the importance of a business’s impact on society when choosing where to work, according to research.

International investments company BNY Mellon, which has become a major employer in Manchester over the last decade, polled more than 300 people aged 16 to 25 from across Greater Manchester to find out how they view corporate social responsibility (CSR).

The survey revealed that 87% view it as important that a company tries to create a positive impact on society. In choosing a career, 75% of those polled said they would be more likely to work for a company actively engaged in CSR.

Young people were also asked about their top five considerations in choosing where to work. While salary (91%) came out on top, career progression opportunities (79%), work-life balance (68%), training and development (57%) and flexible working (48%) were also rated highly.

Just  9%, though, value a company being a market leader, below a commitment to equality and diversity, and health cover.

Matt Wells, Manchester site executive and regional head, Northern UK, at BNY Mellon, said: “Businesses are aware of the importance of a genuine commitment to CSR initiatives in increasing brand awareness, but it’s clear that it is now essential in engaging and attracting the next generation of professionals too.

“The results of this survey paint a clear picture about the way Generation Z views potential employers.

“Far from being apathetic about where they choose to develop their careers, young people take corporate responsibility seriously. This is likely to affect how much time and money businesses set aside for CSR as it becomes more critical in retaining a competitive advantage.”

The 1,200 staff who work at BNY Mellon’s offices  in Piccadilly Gardens and Spinningfields – are encouraged to use two days of paid volunteer time each year to help local charities and community projects.
