£5m school bearing name of football legend complete

A 12-month project to deliver a new purpose-built school named after Preston North End football legend Sir Tom Finney is complete.

Conlon Construction has completed the new £5m Sir Tom Finney Community High School in the city on the site of the former Ashton Community College on Ribbleton Hall Drive.

Designed to accommodate 140 people with a broad spectrum of special education needs (SEN), the 64,584sq ft school includes a new hydrotherapy pool, including ancillary accessible changing, toilet and shower facilities, hard and soft landscaping to the campus including wheelchair ramps, and a sensory garden.

The project, which was commissioned and designed by Lancashire County Council, also includes a sixth form facility, learning resource centre, library, gym and sports hall.

Michael Conlon, chairman at Conlon Construction, said: “SEN environments need close attention to detail to ensure that they meet the diverse needs of a wide variety of learners in a safe environment with flexible space that can be adapted to meet individual requirements.

“Thanks to our broad range of experience delivering education projects, we have been able to create a school that will support the pupils with an engaging environment that will support ongoing development.”

The internal fit out was completed over the summer holidays in time for the autumn term in September 2015.

The former Sir Tom Finney Community High School was opened by the late football legend at its Moor Park site in 2008.
