Gym operator heading for Blackpool’s Talbot Gateway

BLACKPOOL’S new Talbot Gateway development is set to attract a national gym operator.

Blackpool Council has agreed to lease all remaining units underneath the Talbot Road Car Park to a major gym operator, which cannot yet be revealed for legal reasons.

The units, which face onto Cookson Street and Talbot Road, cover 17,244sq ft as one of the Talbot Gateway’s most prominent locations.

Mr Basrai’s World Buffet, due to open in the coming weeks, will operate out of the remaining unit in the building.

Cllr Fred Jackson, Blackpool Council’s Cabinet Member for Municipal Assets, said: “I am delighted to approve a lease of the remaining units at Talbot Road Multi-Storey Car Park.

“The company that we are working with is a national firm looking to open a gym in the heart of Blackpool town centre.

“We have had interest from four gym operators and following this approval we will be agreeing a contract with the proposed company.

“The success of our own gym has paved the way for private sector investment which is fantastic news.

“People ask why all the units aren’t filled but it is vitally important to us that we chose the right businesses that enhance the area and have a long term future.

“In the coming weeks I also expect to approve a lease for one of the retail units in the Number One Bickerstaffe Square offices.

“The Talbot Gateway Central Business District development has transformed this area of Blackpool and once these units are occupied it will increase footfall further.”

Greg Ball, development surveyor for Muse Developments, development partner for the Council, said: “The new facility will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, providing the ultimate in flexibility for people who want to exercise at a time that suits them and we’re really excited to deliver this offering.”

The Blackpool Council run gym, Gateway Fitness, will close as part of the agreement with a new operator.

The equipment will be transferred to Blackpool Sports Centre as a part of the refurbishment.

Montagu Evans represented the Council in attracting the offers from national gym operators and in securing the preferred gym operator.
