Work starts on £40m Wolstenholme Square site

THE demolition of a group of low-grade post-war warehouses begins next week to herald the start of the £40m redevelopment of Liverpool’s Wolstenholme Square by developer Elliot Group.
Contractor Newry Construction has been appointed to undertake the enabling works on the site of the famous Cream nightclub, for which a new subterranean home will be constructed as part of the mixed-use scheme.
A selection process is currently underway for the scheme’s main contractor, with the project’s professional team now appointed for the Falconer Chester Hall-designed development.
White Young Green has been appointed as employer’s agent and project managers. Clancy are civil and structural engineers whilst Abacus are the scheme’s service engineers.
Neil Swanson of Landscape Projects has been tasked with working with international artist Jorge Pardo to deliver the refurbishment of the square’s famous Penelope sculpture and associated landscape works, with the Liverpool office of lawyers Hill Dickinson managing all the contractual elements of the project.
The development will deliver five blocks ranging in height from three to 10 storeys, providing 447 studio and one bedroom apartments as well as a new passageway through to Seel Street, lined by shops, cafes and offices.
