Law firm partner creates People’s History Museum exhibition

A NEW art exhibition at the People’s History Museum in Manchester starts on Monday (October 17).

Supported by national law firm Shoosmiths and developed by one of the firm’s partners and People’s History Museum patron Laura Harper the exhibition will invite 12 contemporary artists, illustrators and designers to showcase work they believe encompasses the theme.

In partnership with DM16, Manchester’s festival of design, the event will run for one week to Sunday October 23.

The exhibition will take over the museum’s Engine Hall and will include works from Manchester-based Mark Beaumont, of creative agency Dinosaur, Mary Branson, Unusual and nine others.

The works on display will either have been created especially for the event by the artists, or donated by them to portray an issue they strongly believe in.

Shoosmiths partner, Laura Harper said: “After becoming a patron of the museum two years ago I wanted to do something more to help secure its future following the funding cuts experienced by many regional museums.

“My job with businesses and professionals in the creative industries means that I work with some of the country’s leading artists and designers.

“I have been fortunate to meet some incredible artists during my career who I was able to approach to help with the idea of this event.

“The museum is one of the most important in the country as it charts the battle for the ballot and recognises the people to whom we owe a great historic debt.

“Of course, life must be lived looking forwards, but it can only be understood in a historical context which is why our museums, and particularly the People’s History Museum, are so important.”

The exhibition is free to attend however donations are welcomed.
