Gift of free parking for towns’ Christmas shoppers
CHRISTMAS shoppers are to benefit from free car parking session in council car parks in Wigan and Leigh town centres in Greater Manchester.
Wigan Council has once again introduced the free periods to support local retailers and businesses as well as shoppers in the run up to Christmas.
The offer includes:
• Free parking after 3pm from Monday November 14 until Saturday January 7 in council car parks in Wigan and Leigh. This includes The Galleries and Water Street multi-storey car parks.
• Free Sunday parking on all the council operated car parks in Wigan and Leigh town centres, from Sunday November 20 through to Sunday January 8.
• Free late night parking on Thursdays until 9pm on The Galleries and Water Street multi-storey car parks from Thursday November 17 to Thursday December 22 and free parking for the whole of Boxing Day Monday December 26.
Council bosses believe free car parking sessions gives shoppers the perfect opportunity to visit the town’s top high street names, independent shops as well as its popular local markets.
The claim Wigan and Leigh markets offer a great variety of gifts and clothing for Christmas as well as high quality, locally sourced fresh food along with that friendly personal service.
Cllr David Molyneux, Wigan Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, said: “Our town centres are the perfect places for Christmas shopping with a wide variety of big high street names and independent outlets as well as our popular and friendly markets.
“Our markets are ideal for Christmas through their high quality produce, friendly service and value for money.
“We know shoppers appreciate parking for free while they shop so we have once again introduced the free after 3pm car parking sessions.
“We hope people take advantage of it and have an enjoyable time getting those special gifts for the festive period in Wigan and Leigh town centres.”
The free parking sessions will be in place for Wigan’s light switch on Thursday November17 from 4.30pm to 7.30pm and Santa’s Parade on Sunday November 20 at 1pm in Mesnes Park.
The Leigh lights switch-on takes place on Thursday November 17 from 5pm to 7pm and the Leigh Santa parade takes place on Saturday November 19 at 4.30pm in and around the Spinning Gate shopping centre.
Car parks taking part in the free sessions include:
Wigan: Water Street MSCP, Galleries MSCP, Sovereign Road, Peppermill Lane, Wilton Street, Chapel Lane, Mona Street, Pennyhurst, Haig Street, Trencherfield Mill.
Leigh: Spinning Gate, The Town Hall Leigh, Doctors Nook, Lord Street, The Railway Arches, Church Street.
The Civic Centre Car Park and on street pay & display bays are not included in the free after 3pm offer. On street pay & display parking is free on Sundays.
