Tory Liverpool City Region mayoral candidate unveiled

THE Conservatives have named their candidate for next year’s Liverpool City Region mayoral election as cushion entrepreneur Tony Caldeira.

Caldeira, 46, is the owner of Caldeira Holdings, which in April agreed a new finance facility of £1.25m with specialist lending and savings bank Aldermore for a turnaround plan.

Caldeira went to school in St Helens and now lives in Liverpool.

He said: “The Liverpool City Region has made good progress but we still lag behind other city regions in the UK. This needs to change.

“My focus will be on creating the economic growth and the jobs that our region needs to not only catch up to, but to overtake, our competitors, both at home and abroad.”

Steve Rotheram is the Labour candidate and the Liberal Democrat candidate is Prescot North councillor Carl Cashman and Tom Crone will stand for the Green Party.

Liverpool City Region is made up of St Helens, Knowsley, Sefton, Wirral and Halton in Cheshire as well as the city itself.

In Greater Manchester, 29-year-old Trafford council leader Sean Anstee will run as the Conservative mayoral candidate against former Home Secretary and Leigh MP Andy Burnham.

Jane Brophy will stand for the Liberal Democrats.

The mayoral elections take place on May 4 2017.
