Bristol scale-up’s hydraulic technology sets sail on British America’s Cup race yacht

Bristol-based scale-up Domin has its ground-breaking hydraulic technology onboard the race yacht Britannia, ready for the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup.

Known as the ‘Formula 1 of sailing’, the America’s Cup is the pinnacle of competitive sailing, where design, engineering, and athleticism are pushed to their limits.

The British team for the last two America’s Cups was led by four-time sailing Olympic gold medallist Sir Ben Ainslie. And now, for the 37th running of the America’s Cup, Ainslie has partnered with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team to form INEOS Britannia.

Domin’s breakthrough in hydraulic systems caught the attention of INEOS Britannia.

Domin’s technology stands out for its innovative use of metal 3D printing and sophisticated fluid dynamics, enabling ultra-compact systems capable of withstanding higher pressures.

These capabilities allowed INEOS Britannia to achieve significant improvements in the yacht’s speed and reliability, ultimately enhancing its competitiveness on the water.

Sir Ben said: “Having Domin as a partner has been an exciting part of our campaign to win the 37th America’s Cup. We are proud to showcase British engineering excellence through our collaboration with a forward-thinking company like Domin.”

Marcus Pont, CEO of Domin, added: “I am in awe at the incredible dedication of Team INEOS Britannia to push the boundaries and accept no compromises. As a business that is driven by the same principles, we’re so proud to be part of this partnership, showcasing the incredible talents within UK engineering.”
