Thunderstorm-detecting group acquired by German firm

Thunderstorm-detecting group Bristol Industrial & Research Associates (Biral) has been acquired by German firm Senseca, a global provider of measurement technology and environmental monitoring solutions.

The sale sees Biral, which will continue to operate under its own brand, expand its capabilities and market reach further under the Senseca umbrella, with the transaction bolstering Senseca’s environmental monitoring capabilities and footprint in the renewable energy sector.

The deal also enables a transition to Biral’s leadership with current finance director Ben Lockwood stepping up to managing director, replacing Paul Smith who retires after decades of service.

Smith said: “It has been an honour to lead Biral over the past years. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved and how we’ve grown into a company recognised for our precision and reliability. I am confident that under Senseca’s management, Biral will continue to flourish and innovate in ways that benefit both our clients and the wider industry.”

Lockwood said: “I’m excited to step into this new role at such a pivotal time for Biral. As we join Senseca, we have a unique opportunity to leverage their global expertise and resources to strengthen our offering further. I look forward to continuing our legacy of innovation and delivering even greater value to our customers.”

Senseca‘s CEO Christian Unterberger added: “We are thrilled to welcome Biral to the Senseca family. Biral’s excellent reputation in visibility and present weather sensors, as well as its thunderstorm detection capabilities, will enhance Senseca’s global footprint in the renewable energy sector and significantly strengthen its environmental monitoring portfolio.”

Burges Salmon’s Corporate and M&A team, working alongside KPMG Corporate Finance (John Levis and Dan Bagnall), advised Biral and its shareholders, with the transaction led by partner Dominic Davis and associate Tom Curnow.
