NASA deal for Cornish company to support astronaut training and space research

A Cornish company behind the world’s deepest pool for sea and space research has announced a partnership with NASA that could help astronauts train for missions to the Moon and Mars.

Blue Abyss has signed a Space Act Agreement with NASA’s Glenn Research Center which aims to accelerate advancements in commercial space training, research, and infrastructure development, further positioning Blue Abyss as a key player in the global space industry.

The partnership between Blue Abyss and NASA Glenn Research Center focuses on developing next-generation capabilities for human spaceflight, training, and simulations of extreme environments.

John Vickers, chief executive at Blue Abyss, said: “This Space Act Agreement with NASA’s Glenn Research Center represents a pivotal milestone for Blue Abyss. As we develop next-generation infrastructure, including our proposed facilities in the US and UK, it helps develop the international space sector, supporting industry growth, training, and infrastructure development that will support international clients and foster innovation.”

Edward Orcutt, Mayor of Brook Park, Ohio (location of the proposed Blue Abyss US facility), said: “The Space Act Agreement between Blue Abyss and NASA unites two major organisations to enhance space training, research, and technology. This partnership positions Brook Park as a premier location in the space industry, driving innovation, creating jobs, fostering education, and attracting investment.”

Ross Hulbert, head of engagement at Spaceport Cornwall, the location of the proposed Blue Abyss UK facility, shared his excitement, said: “We’re thrilled to welcome Blue Abyss to our Space Systems Operations Facility at Spaceport Cornwall. This partnership not only showcases their incredible capabilities but also solidifies the UK’s role in advanced space and subsea training.”
