New chief executive appointed at rugby club

Gloucester Rugby has appointed a new chief executive.

Former player Alex Brown has taken the job following an interim period in the role.

The former lock made 235 appearances for the Cherry & Whites before retiring as a player in 2013.

With three England caps to his name, the 44-year-old has spent over 10 years in the off-field management of the Club, most recently as chief operating officer.

Alex’s appointment was ratified at the Board meeting on last month.

Gloucester Rugby chairman Martin St Quinton said: “We are delighted Alex has accepted the role as CEO on a permanent basis.

“He has already made a significant impact, galvanising the club behind a shared vision and a desire to win both on and off the field. He is a very well-liked and well-respected individual, both at the Club and across the sport, and he has the full support of the board.

“Alex’s appointment to CEO sees changes in the senior leadership team both on and off the field, with George Skivington promoted to Director of Rugby. Skivington will now have responsibility over the entire Playing Department although, importantly, his role as head coach of the first team is unaffected.”

In senior management, finance director, Matt Mulcahy assumes the role of director of finance and operations.

Matt, who has been with the club for eight years, will take charge of all off-field operations, including the long-term improvements to Kingsholm Stadium.

Head of marketing, Nicol McClelland, is promoted to director of marketing and communications 18-months after joining from Team GB.

The former RFU (Rugby Football Union) marketer will also join the Gloucester Rugby Board.

Alex Brown said: “Firstly, I want to thank Martin and the Board for placing their trust in me, and to all the Gloucester supporters for their kind words and well wishes since my interim appointment.

“It really is an honour to have been asked to lead Gloucester Rugby; it has been a huge part of my life for over 20 years, and I am confident that with a brilliant team around me, on and off the field, we can realise the potential of this great Club. I am looking forward to continuing the excellent progress we have made over the past few months and to a successful season ahead.”
