Edgbaston boosted by Champions Trophy sell-out

The ICC Champions Trophy at Edgbaston

Three of the showpiece cricket matches being staged at Edgbaston Stadium for next month’s ICC Champions Trophy tournament have sold out following a final release of tickets.

The Birmingham venue is hosting five fixtures during the tournament and has now allocated all tickets for India v Pakistan on June 4, England v Australia on June 10 and its semi-final on June 15.

The ground is also staging Australia v New Zealand on June 2 and Pakistan v South Africa on June 7.

Gareth Roberts, Commercial Director at Warwickshire County Cricket Club, said: “There has been a huge local interest in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, with these three sold out fixtures having been oversubscribed at every ticket release.

“The tournament is one of the highlights in the global sporting calendar and we’re thrilled to be hosting some of the biggest games in the tournament.
“We look forward to working with our tournament and city partners to welcome fans from around the world in the coming weeks.”

In the last week, more than 15,000 tickets have been sold for all games in the tournament, which is co-hosted by the Oval, in London, and the Cardiff Wales Stadium. Eight fixtures in total have now sold out and sales have exceeded those for the previous Champions Trophy hosted in England and Wales in 2013, when Edgbaston hosted the final between England and India.

The strong demand also takes ticket applications beyond 500,000, from 60 countries, since the initial ballot last September.

Steve Elworthy, tournament director for the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, said: “The demand has been extraordinary so far but there are still limited tickets available for some of matches across all venues.”
