Gym plan for former Jewellery Quarter workshop

The former workshop building

A former workshop within Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter is to be converted for use as a new gymnasium.

Permission to convert the units in Pitsford Street was granted by Birmingham’s planning committee.

Councillors said they were disappointed to see the loss of the traditional workshop use but accepted the plan was in the best interests of the area.

The committee was told that the area had been attracting crime and anti-social behaviour so the scheme represented a planning gain for the area.

The building lies within a courtyard to the rear of existing commercial properties fronting Pitsford Street. The ground floor would accommodate weights equipment, with the first floor used as an open training area.

The intention is to run a specialist personal training studio for clients following personal training plans. They would either attend the premises to have individual tuition or be part of a group of no more than 12 at any one time.

People attending the gym for training would be appointment only and they would be escorted on and off the premises before and after their training sessions.
