Natural burial ground up for sale

Land which has planning permission to be used as a natural burial ground has hit the market.

Hexagon commercial property has been instructed to market the site at Wintery Lane in Rushall, Walsall.

The site measures approximately 8.54 acres and the planning consent delivers 6,256 ‘natural’ burial plots. This is thought to be the only fully consented natural burial ground in the West Midlands with no bodies currently in the ground.

Natural burial is a term used to describe the burial of human remains where the burial area creates habitat for wildlife or preserves existing habitats.

Interest in natural death has grown as people have become increasingly concerned about the emissions and fuel-use associated with cremation, the use of stone for memorials – often shipped considerable distances from overseas quarries, or the use of formaldehyde for embalming, which has an adverse effect upon groundwater.

Harvey Pearson, director at Hexagon Commercial Property, said: “This is an extremely rare opportunity to acquire a fully consented natural burial ground extending to circa 8.54 acres which is capable of servicing the West Midlands.

“This is a versatile site that supports the needs of faiths that require a green or natural burial. The site would also be suitable as a private cemetery.”
