Aldi buys into Hednesford

DISCOUNT supermarket Aldi has signed up to St Modwen’s £50m Hednesford town centre regeneration scheme.
The retailer is purchasing a 15,650 sq ft store at the Chase Gateway phase of the scheme. Construction of the store is due to start in October 2012 with anticipated completion in late spring 2013, generating up to 25 full and part-time jobs.
The construction will include completion of a car park on Chase Gateway providing a total of 165 spaces – 121 to be managed as a short term shoppers’ car park for up to 90 minutes, with the remaining 44 spaces managed by Cannock Chase Council for longer-term parking.
Aldi’s announcement comes just weeks after Costa Coffee, Pets Corner and Lloyds Pharmacy revealed they will open stores at the nearby Victoria Shopping Park, which is under construction and on target to open for Christmas 2012 trading.
Mark Watkins, development surveyor at Birmingham-based St Modwen said: “This latest deal is another example of the great attraction that our transformation of Hednesford town centre holds for leading retailers.”
Tony Baines, managing director of buying, Aldi Stores UK, said: “Aldi is looking forward to welcoming shoppers to the new store in Hednesford when it is completed next year as well as creating jobs for local people.”
Cheetham & Mortimer and Ramsdens are the joint letting agents acting on behalf of St Modwen for the retail scheme and Richard Rae of Rae and Co acted for Aldi Stores.
