Comment: Why we’re backing the Harry Moseley Charity Ball

IT’S all too easy to become ‘charitied out’ these days. There are chuggers in our high streets, plastic sacks coming through the letterbox, empty retail units increasingly being used to sell secondhand goods for one cause or another.

It all gets a bit much doesn’t it? Especially when times are tough and the maxim ‘charity begins at home’ seems to apply more than ever.

We couldn’t agree more. They are all good causes and they all deserve our money and help but sometimes it’s just easier to choose none rather than one.

But there‘s an exception to every rule and we think the exception around these parts is the Help Harry Help Others charity.

The charity is staging the Harry Moseley Charity Ball at the ICC in Birmingham on Friday October 19. It’s going to a big bash – a celebration – and it’s going to be one of the ‘must attend’ events this year in the second city.

There will be celebrities, entertainment and much merriment and many of the region’s top businesses have already signed up, taking a table or a number of seats.

TheBusinessDesk.com is proud to be one of its sponsors and here’s why we think you should consider getting involved.

Harry Moseley was a local kid. He came from Sheldon. He got sick, very sick. He had a brain tumour.

One of the friends he met in hospital died and, as Harry’s brain tumour was inoperable, his own death was also inevitable.

Under such circumstances many of us would have given up but not Harry. He started a fund raising campaign to raise money to fight the disease that had killed his friend. He made colourful bracelets and sold them to raise cash. Despite the debilitating effect of the illness he travelled up and down the country to promote his charitable cause.

Last October Harry died. He was 11. He had achieved something very special in his short lifetime. That’s why we continue to talk about him. The little kid with the big specs and a huge heart.

But his work isn’t finished.

His mum Georgie has taken up the challenge.

Following Harry’s death, Georgie set up the Help Harry Help Others charity. Funds raised in Harry’s name have now smashed through the £1m barrier.

The Harry Moseley Charity Ball should raise another £50,000. It is nearly sold out.

But there are a few tables left and we urge you to get involved with this most worthwhile of local causes.

That’s it. Thanks for listening.
