Carillion chosen by Network Rail to deliver £100m of track renewal work

CONSTRUCTION and support services giant Carillion has won a major contract with Network Rail.

The railway infrastructure organisation has announced that over the current five-year funding period, which runs from April 2014 to March 2019, it will renew more than 7,000km of track, as part of a £25bn investment programme.

Wolverhampton-based Carillion has been selected as one of three preferred partners to deliver plain line track renewals. The regions in which Carillion will deliver renewals include the Midlands into the North West and from Kings Cross to the North East of England. 

This work is expected to be worth approximately £100m to Carillion over the five year period. 

Steve Featherstone, Network Rail track programme director, said: “Today, there are a million more trains on our network than a decade ago and that number increases every year.

“Working with our delivery partners, we will deliver a massive programme of work to maintain, renew and enhance thousands of miles of track over the next five years, with the goal of providing a more reliable railway for passengers and freight.”
