Worcester hospital invests £4.5m upgrading facilities

A WORCESTERSHIRE hospital is investing £4.5m to improve facilities. Spire South Bank Hospital said the investment would bring new jobs and significant healthcare benefits to the area.

The first stage of the hospital’s seven-figure investment has provided a dedicated Oncology and Haematology Suite, which opened last month.

Patients in the new light and spacious suite, where consultants will treat cancerous tumours and blood disorders, will benefit from the latest digital medical technology.

The opening of the new suite closely follows the installation of the latest CT scanning technology – through which detailed images of the body can be examined. Plans are also being finalised for a new, dedicated Breast Care Centre, which will feature digital mammography imaging.

The installation of the CT scanner, and the new Breast Care Centre, will signal the completion of a project to increase the hospital’s diagnostic imaging capability, which now includes an MRI scanner, fluoroscopy and ultrasound imaging.

The third and largest element of the Bath Road-based hospital’s investment programme will be the opening later this year of a £3m state-of-the-art Laparoscopic theatre. Surgeons utilising the high-tech facilities will be able to carry out a range of key-hole procedures, with patients cared for by a specialist team of clinical and support staff.

“We are excited to be rolling out our continued investment and growth plans.” said Ben Nicholson, Hospital Director at Spire South Bank Hospital.

“Our reputation is based around the care and comfort of our patients and the new facilities will add another dimension to the first-class medical services I believe we already offer people from across Worcestershire and the West Midlands.

“Our continuing investment into the hospital ensures patient care remains at the forefront. It’s also an investment which will create new jobs and give a boost to the county’s economy.”

He said that over the years the hospital had attracted leading medical specialists including Orthopaedic, Colorectal, Urological, Gynaecological, General and Ophthalmic Consultants, as well as excellent nurses and support staff.

“Our new suites and theatres will allow us to carry out a wider range of diagnosis and surgery and make some very specialist operations far more accessible,” added Nicholson.

The investment into Worcester by Spire Healthcare, the UK’s second largest and fastest growing private healthcare provider, follows the opening of the new £0.75m Worcestershire Bowel Clinic last September.

The upgrades are part of the Spire Healthcare Group’s £0.6bn national investment programme.
