Met student puts Colmore District in the picture

THE WINNER of the first Colmore Business District photographic competition was Birmingham Metropolitan College student Molly Sidwells.

Her winning picture features a window cleaner abseiling down  Colmore Gate on Colmore Row, one of the most iconic buildings in Birmingham’s business district. See below for her winning image.

Judge and professional photographer, Jas Sansi: “A key element of successful photography is being in the right place at the right time with a working camera.

“Molly’s Abseiling Window Cleaner is a clear example of this. It illustrates a snapshot of the city at work. Molly’s fast reactions captured an insight into how the soaring buildings in Colmore Business District are maintained.

“The process of cleaning the windows is also an entertaining one for the onlooker. The advanced techniques of architecture and construction that allow inspiring buildings such as these to be built are humanised by the action depicted in Molly’s thought provoking and fast-[thinking snapshot.”

Jas was joined on the CBD Snapshot judging panel by Marc Reeves, editor of TheBusinessDesk.Com  and Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery’s business development manager, Hollie Smith-Charles.

Molly, a photography student, said:  “At college we are encouraged to aim high and when I read about the competition I thought it would be a great way to try to get my work out in the public domain. To win the competition is amazing and I am very excited about seeing my image in print.”

CBD Snapshot was open to anyone living in, working in or visiting the district and entrants were encouraged to submit their most interesting, inspiring or simply best looking pictures of the District.

Molly Sidwells’ work will be seen throughout the year within CBD communication material.

As part of her winning prize, Molly also won a book signed by international photographer Brian Griffin.  Mr Griffin’s work was recently on display in Colmore Business District as part of an outdoor photographic exhibition organised by CBD in partnership with Birmingham City University and Birmingham City Council.

Entries for the 2011 competition are now being sought and can be submitted by emailing marketing@colmorebusinessdistrict.com .
