PICTURE GALLERY: Next step for BCU’s £60m expansion plans

BIRMINGHAM City University has submitted an application to city council planners for the first phase of a campus expansion £60m.

The project is a revised version of a previous scheme for which BCU had permission but was forced to scrap after the Government announced plans for a High Speed 2 rail terminus in Eastside.

The new facility will be 18,000 sq metres, the previous was 30,000 sq metres, and will house the university’s institute of art and design.

It will offer technology-based arts provision and feature TV, radio and photographic studios to underpin its media courses.

Specialist facilities include industry standard media production space, including four TV studios, radio studies and associated technical support space.

The new facility will be adjacent to the Millennium Point building, already home to BCU’s Faculty of Technology, Engineering and the Environment and part of the Faculty of Performance, Media and English.

Designed by Birmingham practice Associated Architects, work is expected to start in August ready for the 2013/14 academic year.

This latest news follows the recent announcements by University College Birmingham and the University of Birmingham that they were seeking tenders for major campus construction work.
