Ninety jobs under threat at Express & Star publisher

AROUND 90 jobs could be lost at Wolverhampton-based media group the Midland News Association.
The company, which publishes both the Express & Star and Shropshire Star along with a series of weekly newspapers across the region, has told staff it is looking to shed around 10% of the workforce from across all departments.
TheBusinessDesk.com understands the redundancies would be split with around 60 coming from the company’s Black Country and Staffordshire offices and a further 30 from the Shropshire Newspapers division.
A 30-day consultation process has now begun following meetings between manager and staff council representatives.
The news follows a previous round of redundancies just over two years ago when around 135 jobs were axed and certain functions including production and finance were merged between the two divisions.
MNA managing director Alan Harris said: “Like every other newspaper publisher, the MNA is facing very difficult trading conditions and there seems to be no sign of improvement.
“If we are to continue to invest for the future in our publications, both in print and online, then we must make some cost savings.
“The board fully understand that this is a very difficult time for all staff and we are doing our very best to keep everybody informed of what is happening.”
