M&B and Marston’s join hotel chain for £100m expansion

TWO West Midlands pub companies are among a group to have joined forces with budget hotel operator Travelodge in a £100m expansion project.

Travelodge plans to open 36 sites over the next four years by co-locating hotels with pubs.

Having already co-located with pub companies on 15 bespoke developments across the UK, the hotel chain is actively working with Birmingham-based Mitchells & Butlers and Wolverhampton firm Marston’s to find further development opportunities.

Other pubcos involved are JW Lees, Greene King and JD Wetherspoon, with Travelodge saying it has devised a development strategy in partnership with the quintet.

In Kidderminster, Travelodge is developing a 53-room hotel on land adjacent to an existing pub, a development forward funded by Marston’s.

Paul Harvey, Travelodge managing director for development, said: “The pub companies have noticeably stepped up their development plans over recent months and in many parts of the country their target locations correspond with ours.

“We have been contacted by all the major players in the market and we are now pro-actively seeking out sites with them.

“A combined hotel/pub development is attractive to banks and funders, making the development process a lot quicker than it otherwise may be.”
