Castlefield manufactures growth on strong product demand

HORTICULTURE product manufacturer Castlefield has seen a steady increase in its performance driven by strengthening demand.

The Dudley firm, part of the Bird Stevens Group, has reported growth year on year for the last three years, while in the first four months of 2011 turnover is up 20% at £175,000. This follows increases in 2008/09 (46%) and 2009/10 (38%).

The firm supplies garden centres, nurseries, soft fruit growers, wholesalers and distributors and part of the growth has been attributed to the introduction of new products such as its E-range of garden centre trolleys.

Steve Ruston, Castlefield managing director, said all the firm’s products had been designed and manufactured in the Midlands, adding the company had also received interest in its products from businesses abroad.

“We are over the moon with the success we have had over the last 12 months and we are particularly pleased with how well our new E-range has been received,” he said.

“The garden centre trolleys in the E-range were initially custom-made and engineered to provide a solution and combat common problems faced by trolley users. After witnessing the benefits and hearing such positive feedback they have now become a permanent addition to the Castlefield line.”

Turnover at parent group Bird Stevens has also risen – by 12% in 2009/10 and by 10% in the first four months of 2011. Current turnover stands at around of £1.1m.

Presswork operations rose by 25% during the first quarter of this year.
