Plot acquired for affordable homes in Smethwick

Property consultancy Harris Lamb has acquired a site in Smethwick for an unnamed developer and planning permission has been granted for the 1.1 acre plot on Little Moor Land and South Street.

Because the scheme is designated as affordable housing, the local council were keen to support the planning application.

Chris Jones, the head of residential land at Harris Lamb said: “This scheme has received huge support from Sandwell Council, and we are currently in negotiations with a leading Housing Association with a view to construction to starting this summer with the support of a Homes England grant.”

Homes England is a government agency which helps to facilitate the “delivery of sufficient new homes, where they are most needed, to deliver a sustained improvement in affordability”.

Jones added: “There has been considerable support from the government around the provision of affordable housing across the country, and with a big demand across the West Midlands and the backing of local politicians, this is extremely positive news for the region. With affordability issues getting more challenging to enter the housing market for an increasing number of people, its great to see properties of this standard being made available for both buyers and those seeking a rental at an affordable rate.”

The scheme will comprise of two and three bedroom homes which will be available for both shared ownership and rent.

Harris Lamb is looking to complete negotiations and begin construction “in the coming weeks.”
